Political Economy of Technological Innovation Policies

Gianluca Sampaolo is Post-doctoral Researcher of Applied Economics at the University of Macerata.

Since 2022 he has been carrying out research at the Department of Law and since 2028 he has been a Senior Fellow at the China Center of the same institution.

A sinologist by training, he graduated summa cum laude in Global Politics and International Relations. He earned an industrial PhD focused on economic and industrial policies for the global Blue Economy, funded through the Eureka program at the University of Macerata and co-sponsored by the ISTAO Adriano Olivetti Business School. He has gained valuable international academic and research experience in the European Union, the United States, and China, enriching his linguistic, intercultural, and relational skills.

As a post-doctoral researcher, he has specialized in the intersection of geopolitics and industrial policies for technological innovation. He is the author and co-author of scientific publications addressing topics such as geopolitics and the political economy of technological innovation policies, with a comparative focus on China, the United States, and the EU, particularly in the semiconductor industry and related research and innovation ecosystems.

Since 2022, he has been a member of the Scientific Committee of CNEUCN (China-Europe Carbon Neutral Technology). Since 2019, he has been a teacher of Economics of China at the Confucius Institute of the University of Macerata, and a fellow at the National Interuniversity Center (Italy) for Applied Economics Studies (CiMET).

He has been a visiting researcher at the Beijing Normal University (Beijing, China), the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (Cottbus, Germany), the China Data Analysis and Research Hub (Vienna, Austria), the Northern Ireland Water LTD (Belfast, UK), and the Ocean University of China (Qingdao, China).

Finally, he was a tutor of the Master in Global Management for China in the editions coordinated by the University of Macerata (2018-2021).
